I Wear Lucy is a multipart project comprised of a physical installation, a video piece and a website. Products from a television sitcom are made available for purchase to consumers worldwide by dialing an 800 number or through the website.
This work creates a microcosm of a phenomenon we experience in the world at large, that is, the blending of the boundaries between the fictional representation of life and its supporting mechanism of economic production and distribution.
The choice of the I Love Lucy show stems from a shift that this program introduced into the strategies of advertising. In the context of the 1950s when the separation between program content and advertising was more clear, the Lucy Show initiated the practice of bringing actual products into the program, what is now commonly known as merchandising.
